Jordan Rhodes retains ambition to be Scotland's number one striker

Jordan Rhodes has reiterated his desire to be Scotland's number one striker at international level following his move to Middlesbrough on transfer deadline day.

The 25-year-old, who has 13 caps for the senior side, joined the Championship high-flyers from Blackburn Rovers for a fee in the region of £9m on Monday.

His last appearance under Gordon Strachan came almost a year ago when he was a second-half substitute against Gibraltar in March's 6-1 home win.

He's since struggled to dislodge the likes of Steven Fletcher and Steven Naismith who played up front for the national team in the Euro 2016 qualifiers.

English-born Rhodes, who qualifies to play north of the border because he completed five years of education in Scotland, says he remains determined to fight for his position.

"That's my ambition," he said, when asked if he wanted to be Scotland's number one striker. "I'd love to be it one day.

"Whether or not it will happen, who knows, I'll just try and keep working as hard as I can to maybe warrant that in future years.

"It's something I'm really not focusing on at the moment though. I'm just trying to do my best for Middlesbrough and hopefully if things go well that comes along, but my main priority has to be club football because without that you never get recognition at international level."
