Eddie Jones says England need THREE YEARS before they will be up to speed

The head coach has two wins from two in the Six Nations so far but pointed out that in the first year 'you are coaching the previous coach’s team – that’s the reality'

England head coach Eddie Jones, captain Dylan Hartley and Ben Youngs  Long haul: Jones says it will be a few years before he gets England to where he wants them

Eddie Jones has warned England fans not to expect miracles – he won’t have his new team up to speed for three years.

The boss is two from two in the Six Nations after wins in Scotland and Italy but the going will get tougher when Ireland visit Twickenham on Saturday.

Jones has not tossed the baby out with the bath water – most of his squad featured under Stuart Lancaster – but has given debuts to Jack Clifford, Paul Hill and Maro Itoje.

The Aussie has told the Twickers faithful he is no magician – and it might not all ‘click’ until the 2019 World Cup. Jones said: “You look at most teams around the world when a coach takes over, the first year you are coaching the previous coach’s team – that’s the reality.

“The second year, you can change it by 50 per cent, the third year you can change it by 80 per cent. Which means by the third year it’s your team. Now that’s where you should be at your best. The third and fourth years are the years you get your maximum.

“I think there are some good young players coming through who are going to break the mould of English rugby. With the right maturation process, I think we have some guys who have potential to be really outstanding.

“I don’t want quick fixes. I want to build a team that has sustainable success. To do that you need a solid base and what I’m trying to create this season is a solid base. If you get a solid base it’s easy to add things in.”

Jones kicked off with a 15-9 win at Murrayfield and followed it up with a five-try 40-9 demolition of Italy last Sunday.

England top the Six Nations table with two home games and a trip to France to come – but Jones is still not happy.

He added: “We are a bit like an old car at the moment, aren’t we? Our lineout worked really well in the first game and the scrum was a bit shaky.

“The second game our lineout was shaky and our scrum was good. But we are going in the right direction.

We have definitely got the bits and pieces there to have a very good set-piece pack.

“If you look at the World Cup stats, England was ranked eighth in the breakdown attack, and eighth in breakdown defence. So this isn’t a temporary problem, it’s been a problem for a long time. And that takes a long time to fix.”

Ireland arrive as they struggle to make up for the loss of talismanic second row Paul O’Connell.

Jones said: “Every team goes through generation changes. They’re going through one, but they’ve got the benefit of being a winning team over a long period of time, so that compensates for the loss of some key players.”
