Waitakere ding Dragons’ hopes
Well out of the race for the semi-finals themselves, former champions Waitakere United dinged Canterbury United’s last four campaign with an entertaining 2-2 draw at QBE Stadium on Sunday.
Both sides enjoyed a host of scoring opportunities but it was a well-worked Nicolai Berry goal in the 39th minute which provided a deserved Waitakere United first half lead. When Sean Lovemore struck an excellent second goal for the hosts five minutes after the restart, it looked a long way back for Willy Gerdsen’s team.
But stalwart defender Dan Terris pulled a goal back for the visitors with a header from an Aaron Clapham corner in the 79th minute and when Andre de Jong was barged over in the Waitakere penalty area five minutes later, Aaron Clapham stepped up to convert to the spot kick to haul his side level.
Recommended SURE BET:
Canterbury will rue some missed chances earlier in the contest, including twice hitting the woodwork; a first-half de Jong header crashed against the crossbar before Angus Kilkolly rifled a shot against Danny Robinson’s left-hand upright just 60 seconds after Lovemore had made it 2-0 with an excellent low drive which Canterbury United ‘keeper Coey Turipa couldn’t keep out.
The result sees Canterbury United remain fourth on 23 points, four behind second-placed Hawke’s Bay United and one back of Team Wellington with two games to play. Waitakere remain sixth on 13 points.
Early on the visitors had also had a big shout for a penalty turned away while a Jesse Dingjan corner would have found its way directly into Robinson’s net but for a headed goal line clearance saving the day on the half hour mark.
Turipa was also in the action at the other end, doing well to deny Waitakere on several occasions including a sprawling save on a deflected Ryan Cain shot in the first half.
The goal mouth action kept coming in the second half, Turipa could only watch as Berry fizzed a well-struck shot just wide of his post just before the hour mark while Robinson did well at the other end a few minutes later to deny de Jong when the New Zealand U-20 representative was through one-on-one with the Waitakere ‘keeper.
But Terris’ header turned momentum inside the final 10 minutes and after Clapham’s spot kick the visitors had several other good opportunities to complete the turnaround but they couldn’t find the composure or quality in the key moment which would have secured a vital win in the race for second place.
