Borussia Dortmund’s Twitter account issued a perfect response to speculation linking midfielder Ilkay Gundogan with Manchester City. Spanish newspaper Diario Sport tweeted a link that speculated that the German had committed to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, but Dortmund’s official handle issues a swift, and decisive response.
As is characteristic of the Spanish press, tabloid Diario Sport indulged in some far-fetched speculation when it claimed in a report that Barcelona had approached Gundogan. However, the same report claimed that the Catalans were rebuffed by the German midfielder in their approach, as he had apparently already ‘committed’ to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
City fans barely had time to get excited before Dortmund’s Twitter handle issued this response:
Gundogan le comunica al Barcelona que se va al City. Los detalles: http://www.sport.es/es/noticias/barca/gundogan-comunica-barcelona-que-city-4910161 … #fcblive pic.twitter.com/dzCBu9wTzZ
.@sport Really? We should know about that, shouldn't we? Truth is, we don't know anything about that.
Gundogan, who’s been in excellent form for Die Schwarzgelben this season, having scored 3 goals and 6 assists so far, has been the subject of incessant speculation, with Manchester City and Barcelona being constantly linked with him, especially as Pep Guardiola is said to be a long-time admirer of the German midfield maestro.

Dortmund’s Twitter account has previous
Borussia Dortmund’s Twitter account has experience with shutting down rumours with aplomb, as the German club’s account is widely considered to be on of the best at sarcastic responses. Dortmund are not just great at shutting down newspapers with their responses but have also silenced Twitter ‘ITK’ account IndyKaila. The infamous rumour monger had speculated about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang earlier this season, but
Dortmund responded with aplomb, saying:
Emerick Aubameyang misses @BVB training. The reason is unknown. Was he meeting a English club to discuss move?? pic.twitter.com/teWm0nNDlQ
@indykaila The reason is pretty well known in fact: He missed training due to a personal appointment. Will be back tomorrow.
Banter with a club’s fans is also not
beyond the Germans, most notably when Yaya Sanogo scored the opener for
Arsenal against Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League fixture last
season. Dortmund’s stunned response is as follows:
??? #afcbvb 1-0
When it was claimed that Dortmund didn’t know about Sanogo, their response was characteristically acerbic:
.@itumelengeric We do. We just couldn’t believe it. And still can’t. #afcbvb 1-0
Dortmund are also a helpful lot, as their
Twitter handle is @BVB which also happens to be the initials of the
Black Veil Brides, and immensely popular band. Here’s @BVB helping out a
lost fan:
@BVB hi my name is dnysha and I'm your big fan you guys rock and I love ashley purdy because he is hot
@d62496811
That's very nice. However, we're not the band you're looking for. In
fact, we are not even a band. We're a football (soccer) club
