Football fans got a boost today after the Prime Minister backed the Mirror’s call to give supporters a fair deal on tickets.
Aston Villa fan David Cameron told MPs there was a ‘problem’ with prices going up as billions of pounds in TV money floods into the game.

Shadow sports minister Clive Efford raised the issue during Prime Minister’s Questions.

He asked the PM: “Will the Prime Minister act to give fans a place at the table in club boardrooms in order that their voices can be heard when issues such as ticket prices are being discussed?”

The PM pledged to look ‘very carefully’ at the issue and replied: “I will look very carefully at the suggestion you make because I think there is a problem here with some teams, some clubs, who put up prices very rapidly every year - even though some of the money for football actually comes through the sponsorship and the equipment and other sources.”

Millwall fan Mr Efford , who has also backed our call for a fair deal, is introducing a Private Members Bill to give fans a place in club boardrooms.

A senior Downing Street source added: “There are growing calls from supporters’ groups to deal with this.

“We saw what happened on Saturday at Anfield. It’s for clubs to try and address it.

“I think in Liverpool’s case they are now reviewing their position. Supporters are the lifeblood of the sport.

“It’s very important that people can afford to go to games, and that people aren’t priced out.”

Mr Efford also backed the Football Supporters’ Federation campaign for cheaper prices for away fans.

FSF chairman Michael Clarke warned grounds would be filled with ‘tourists taking selfies’ if prices continued to rise.

Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Man United, Norwich and Swansea have frozen season ticket prices for 2016-17, while West Ham reduced theirs for their move to the Olympic Stadium.

Eight other Premier League teams - Chelsea, Spurs, Manchester City, Leicester, Bournemouth, West Brom, Sunderland and Watford - will announce prices later this year, despite £8bn coming in from the TV deal at home and abroad from 2016/19.

Ian Stirling, the vice-chairman of Manchester United Supporters’ Trust, warned a national boycott may be needed to make clubs act.

He said: “Until there is collective action, the Premier League will continue to ignore calls for reform on ownership, governance, regulation and ticket pricing.”

Tim Payton, of Arsenal Supporters’ Trust, said a boycott was ‘very difficult for fans, who want to support their team.
But he added: “You really have to send a message. Enough is enough. It’s time to share some of that money with fans and stop squeezing us until we can no longer support the team.”

Richard Monaghan, who has been attending matches at Anfield for five years, told how tickets for disabled
Liverpool fans were rocketing from next season - with a season ticket costing £134.50 more in the Main Stand, rising from £637.50 to £772.

He said: “I find it questionable from a moral standpoint.”

Dr John Pugh MP, a lifelong Liverpool fan, said: ‘If the club start putting their tickets at sky-high prices, many fans won’t have the chance to enjoy a game. Come on LFC, think again about this price rise”.
