Liverpool to consult fans over new ticket scheme for European away games

Consultation: Reds fans will be asked about the new system

Liverpool are to consult fans before deciding whether or not to keep the new ticket scheme for European away games which was trialled at Augsburg on Thursday.

Travelling Reds had to collect their tickets from the German city, rather than from Anfield or receiving them through the post as has been the case previously, report the Liverpool Echo.

Over a thousand supporters made the trip to see their side draw 0-0 in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie.

Liverpool made the change in response to the fact that in recent seasons an increasing number of tickets for European aways have either not been used or sold on via touts.

Some fans buy tickets in order to secure the credit on their buying history for future matches but then don't travel, leaving empty seats and the Reds are keen to stamp that out.

The selling of tickets is still based on attendance at previous games and supporters are able to assign the name of the person using the ticket.

Kopites in Germany had to go to a city centre collection point where they had to present their passport, season ticket/members card and a copy of the purchase confirmation email.

Every ticket had to be collected by the supporter whose name was registered against it. And only those tickets actually collected went down as credits in the buying history.

There were some complaints about the time spent queuing with some bemoaning that they waited up to an hour to get their tickets. But others insisted it was a welcome change to combat the issue of touting.

A club statement read: "Liverpool Football Club would like to thank supporters who collected their match tickets in Augsburg for their cooperation in ensuring the process ran smoothly.

"This process was new to both Liverpool FC and supporters. We will review in due course."
