» Leeds target 22-year-old defender after he fails to hit on Elphick
Leeds are eyeing up a move for Barnsley centre-back Alfie Mawson
after Tommy Elphick joined Aston Villa on Monday, according to reports.
The Daily Star claims that owner Massimo Cellino is keen to snap up the 22-year-old.
However the Tykes are unlikely to want to sell one of their prized
assets to a local rival and it has been been suggested that they will
put a high asking price on the defender.
It was confirmed that Elphick had left Bournemouth and joined Aston Villa despite a late attempt from Leeds to hijack the deal, and the Yorkshire club will now be keen to ensure they don’t miss out another target.
The Elland Road giants have already coaxed former Barnsley chief executive Ben Mansford to the club this week.
However recently appointed Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom will
be sure to want Mawson to remain with the club on their return to the
Championship again after a two-year absence.
The centre-back starred in a total of 58 matches across all
competitions in the recently completed season, as he helped the club
achieve promotion and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
In other Leeds news, striker target Ashley Fletcher is ready to quit Manchester United and move to Elland Road.
