Supporters of the Irish national squad have been recognized the best
fans of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Euro 2016
which France is hosting, reported France Football.
Anne Hidalgo, the Mayor of Paris, awarded the Grand Vermeil medal of the Paris city hall to the Irish fans.
“Their behavior was extremely positive, joyful,” the mayor announced. “They were exemplary. We wanted to say thanks.”
Ireland made it to the Euro 2016 round of 16, where, however, they were defeated 1-2 by the host nation, France.
Previous recipients of the Grand Vermeil medal include writer Toni
Morrison, jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, and tennis star Rafael Nadal.
