Arsenal lead chase for £23m Chelsea target after contract offer is turned down

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has turned down fresh contract talks with Borussia Dortmund ahead of the summer transfer window, with the Armenian’s head apparently turned by big deals from the Premier League, according to German publication Bild.


As the report states, the 27-year-old is heading into the final year of his contract. Dortmund are desperate to tie him down long-term, but with his refusal to discuss a new deal they may have no choice but to let him go.

He’s recently been linked with a £23m move to Arsenal (via the Daily Star), and Dortmund presumably can’t afford to turn down such a huge sum and risk losing him for free next summer. Mkhitaryan has been a massive part of Dortmund’s success this past season, so understandably they don’t want to let him go. If the player himself is looking to force his way out though, then there’s little they can do to hold onto him.

Mkhitaryan has been among those most heavily linked with a move to Arsenal this summer, with his impressive form seeing many top clubs chasing his signature. The report suggests we’re facing serious competition from Chelsea, with both clubs already making an offer for the in-form attacking midfielder.

The Bundesliga star is apparently keen on a move to the Premier League, with the financial rewards on offer a huge boost as well. It’s possible that Dortmund will stubbornly hold onto him for the final year of his contract, but if they are willing to sell then we have a great chance of landing his signature.

Chelsea are obviously still a financial powerhouse, but after last season they are without European football and may not be as appealing.
