Bundesliga 2015/16 final day permutations and scenarios: Europe and relegation spots TBC

The Bundesliga draws to a close this weekend with much still to play for at both ends of the table.

Two things we know for sure is that Bayern Munich were crowned league champions for a record fourth time last week after defeating Ingolstadt 04 2-1. Hannover 96 will play Bayern in their final Bundesliga appearance after finishing bottom and being relegated a number of weeks ago, ending their 14 year stay in Germany’s top flight.

Here we look at the other issues that will be decided this coming Saturday.

League winners/Champions League

Bayern manager signed off in style winning the Bundesliga title for the third time. They will go into their game with Hanover on Saturday a comfortable eight points ahead of nearest challengers Borussia Dortmund in second. Bayern and Dortmund will come face to face on Saturday 21st May in the DFB-Pokal Final, with Guardiola aiming to win the double before jumping ship for Manchester City in the summer.
Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen will be playing Champions League football next season and it is likely they shall be joined by Borussia Monchengladbach, who currently occupy the final Champions League qualification spot. A draw for The Foals will guarantee their place in Europe’s premier competition, however Mainz 05, Hertha Berlin and Schalke 04 have a slim chance of making the top four. I
f there is an 11, 14 or 15 goal difference swing against Monchengladbach for either of these teams respectively then they would qualify. Andre Schubert’s side can probably rest easy that that scenario will not happen.

Europa League/On the beach

The Europa League places are between three clubs. Mainz, Hertha and Schalke who are all on 49 points. Hertha travel to Mainz on Saturday knowing only a victory will guarantee them Europa League football next season. A point will do for Mainz. Both however could be leapfrogged by Schalke if they draw and The Royal Blues overcome 1899 Hoffenheim.

The team which finishes in seventh place will gain a place in the Europa League, unless a UEFA Fair Play spot is won by another of the Bundesliga sides.
VfL Wolfsburg, FC Koln and Ingolstadt 04 are free to enjoy the final weekend of the season before the summer as they have nothing more to gain and are free from the threat of relegation

Relegation

Hannover’s fate was confirmed a few weeks ago and they will drop into 2.Bundesliga for the first time since 2002.

Five points separate FC Augsburg in eleventh place and VfB Stuttgart in seventeenth, all seven teams are in danger of dropping into either the relegation zone or the relegation play off with the third best team in 2.Bundesliga.
Stuttgart need a win to survive in the Bundesliga and hope that Eintracht Frankfurt or Werder Bremen lose. A big defeat for 1899 Hoffenheim, Darmstadt 98, Hamburger SV and Augsburg and a win for Bremen could see either one of those teams drop into the play-off zone. The most likely team for this to happen to is Hoffenheim, Hamburg will want to avoid a third straight season in the play-off.
Whichever team goes down shall be replaced by SC Freiburg and RB Leipzig. The team in the play-off from 2.Bundesliga is Nurenberg.
