World champions Germany have lost
the first of two friendlies in the build-up to EURO 2016 in France after
Joshua Kimmich's Germany debut ended in a 3-1 reverse against Slovakia.
Mario Gomez put the hosts in the lead from the spot early in the
contest, but the day turned sour shortly before half-time as Marek
Hamsik and Michal Duris netted for the visitors. Jurai Kucka sealed the
final scoreline early in the second half.
“We conceded silly goals, a long-range shot and
two set pieces. We mustn't allow that,” Götze commented after the final
whistle. “We're pursuing a big goal and we have to work hard for it.”
Löw will announce the final squad to contest the European championship
finals on Tuesday 31 May. The Germany head coach has to reduce his
roster by four players from 27 to 23 for the tournament from 10 June to
10 July.

Götze tripped in the box
All three Bayern pros who were called up
for the friendly made the starting line-up. Jérôme Boateng, Kimmich and
Mario Götze made appearances whereas Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller
stayed in the team’s Ascona training base. Boateng played 64 minutes,
Kimmich left the pitch after 75 minutes of a convincing Germany debut.
The 22,110 crowd in Augsburg saw the Germans
dominate the match from the start and take the lead via Gomez's 27th
international goal after Götze was felled in the box. Löw's troops
subsequently failed to make the most of their chances. Hamsik's
sumptuous long-range drive and Duris' header turned the tide shortly
before the break, edging Slovakia into a 2-1 lead.
Referee Serge Gumienny from Belgium had to
extend the interval to almost 40 minutes due to a torrential downpour
and hail. Kucka then wrapped things up early into the second half,
blasting home on the volley from 12 yards. The hosts struggled for
rhythm on the rain-drenched turf, taking hardly any shots at goal in the
second half. Götze gave a dogged and committed display but missed a
gilt-edged chance with 10 minutes to go.
