Schweini named in Germany squad, Reus misses out

Joachim Low has named Bastian Schweinsteiger in his Germany’s 23-man squad for Euro 2016, but there is no place for Marco Reus.

Manchester United midfielder Schweinsteiger was a doubt to travel to the tournament, having not played competitive football since March due to a knee injury.

However, Germany manager has decided to keep faith with his captain, with Reus, Karim Bellarabi, Julian Brandt and Sebastian Rudy being cut from the provisional squad.

Borussia Dortmund forward Reus misses out following the advice of medical staff, meaning there is a place for former Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski.

“The medical staff could not give a clear prognosis for Marco,” Low said.

“He has massive injury problems and the medical staff was very sceptical about his ability to last through the coming weeks and such a gruelling tournament.

“It is a bitter decision and bitter for Marco.”

Midfielder Sami Khedira added: “He can barely run straight at the moment and you have to be fully fit if you play in a European championship.

“It is very bitter but I am confident he will get his chance on the big stage.”
