Joachim Low insists Germany‘s team doctors will decide whether Bastian Schweinsteiger is fit enough for the European Championships next month.

The Manchester United midfielder has been sidelined since March after partially tearing his knee ligament while training with his national team.

Schweinsteiger had been out of action for two months prior to that setback with a separate knee injury sustained against Sheffield United and he now faces a race against time to be fit for the Euros in France.

The 31-year-old confirmed at a press conference last week, after he was included in Low’s provisional squad for the Euros, that he was feeling good ahead of the final squad announcement.

Low has stuck by the former Bayern Munich star until now, but when asked about the captain’s fitness on Sunday, the German tactician was unsure about Schweinsteiger’s progress.

“Of course, the physicians decide in one way or another player which player is fit,” Low told Germany’s official website.

“It is in the hands of our responsible doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt who says whether or not the player will be fit in the next few weeks.

“Bastian was training on Sunday in the square and has worked with the ball. When the injured players have the okay from the doctor that it poses no risk for the next few weeks, then that is good.”

Schweinsteiger saw his first season in England largely interrupted by injuries after initially impressing under Louis van Gaal.

The energetic midfielder will be eager to build his fitness up before Low announces his squad, which could also allow him to put on a show out in France for new Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho ahead of next season.
