Angelique Kerber took the unusual step of celebrating her Australian Open win by taking a dip in Melbourne's Yarra river on Sunday.
The
German. after beating Serena Williams in the final, made good on a bet
after promising she would follow in the footsteps of Jim Courier -
winner of the Australian Open in 1992 and 1993 - by taking a swim in the
river if she won in Melbourne.

1. Kerber
was born in Bremen to a German mother and Polish father. She is now
based in Poland in the small town of Puszczykowo - which has a
population of 10,000 - where her grandparents own a tennis centre named
after her - Centrum Tenisowe Angie.

Kerber is right-handed but is a leftie on the tennis court. Unlike
Rafael Nadal, who was encouraged by coach and uncle Toni to play with
his left hand, Kerber become a southpaw for no specific reason other
than picking up the racket with her left hand when she took up the sport
at the age of three.

Kerber's idol is Steffi Graf and she spent time with the 22-time Grand
Slam singles champion during a training camp in Las Vegas last March.
Graf sent a text to Kerber after reaching the final, saying
'Congratulations from me. I'm really happy for you.'

4. Kerber
has been a fan of FC Bayern Munich since her childhood, often talking
about football with her German compatriots on tour. The club sent Kerber
a message of congratulations on Twitter with a photo of players
including Manuel Neuer and Philipp Lahm celebrating the result.

Kerber dumped coach Benjamin Ebrahimzadeh last year and reunited with
old coach Torben Beltz, who she had split with previously in 2013. Beltz
did not shave during the fortnight in Melbourne as a superstition with
Kerber progressing through the tournament.
