Newcastle
United failed to land top target Saido Berahino in this transfer window
but Steve McClaren's successful treble swoop for Jonjo Shelvey, Andros
Townsend and Henri Saivet saw them become the Premier League's top
spenders.
On top of their £28.5million outlay on that trio, they also landed Seydou Doumbia on loan.
Newcastle's
total net spend for the 2015-16 season has been just a touch more than
£70m, or more than any club bar Manchester City.
Newcastle splashed out £12million to sign England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea City last month
Owner Mike Ashley spent big during the window with the Magpies the Premier League's top spenders
Newcastle United also signed winger Andros Townsend from Tottenham in a deal worth £12million
City
arguably made the most dramatic deadline day acquisition of all,
confirming that Pep Guardiola will become their manager from this
summer, when their net spend this season of £101.5m (hardly any of it in
the January window) is likely to be dwarfed as Sheikh Mansour arms his
new manager with the funds to take the club to an even higher level.
Back
in the land of the merely rich clubs - which is pretty much everyone in
the Premier League these days - it was Stoke who made the most
expensive single purchase of any club in Europe this window. Yes, you
read that correctly.
The £18.3m
they spent on Giannelli Imbula not only smashed their club record but
was more than anyone - Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, you name
it - shelled out on single player this year in Europe.
Everton signed the second most expensive player in Oumar Niasse from Lokomotiv Moscow for £13.5m.
Everton spent £13.5million on Lokomotiv Moscow forward Oumar Niasse on transfer deadline day
Chelsea spent just £3.5m in January, bringing in defender Matt Miazga from MLS side New York Red Bulls
The
deals for Imbula and Niasse were both notable for the buying clubs
providing official confirmation of the prices paid. That is much rarer
than is probably healthy.
With
Newcastle as top net spenders, there were some surprise names just
behind them, not least Watford (£24.6m net spend), Stoke, Sunderland and
Bournemouth making up the top five.
And
the list of five clubs from Europe to spend more than £10m on a single
player, four come from the Premier League, Bournemouth, Stoke, Everton
and Newcastle with Roma the only other European side with their £12.83m
signing of midfielder Gerson from Fluminense
Watford’s
haul of players arriving included Abdoulaye Doucoure from Rennes for
£8m and Adalberto Penaranda for a similar sum, although both will remain
with other clubs on loan for the time being.
Mario Suarez was one of a number of January arrivals at Watford as they look to avoid relegation

Watford signed Rennes midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure for £8m - the midfielder has joined Granada on loan
It’s
a quirky fact that Watford’s seasonal net spend on players now, at
£56.2m, is more than Arsenal, Tottenham, Southampton, Swansea, Norwich
and Aston Villa combined (£55m). Tottenham have the lowest net spend
this season at precisely zero.
Spurs
were one of two significant net gainers this window, primarily by
selling Townsend to Newcastle, while Chelsea were the other, thanks to
the sale of Ramires to the Chinese Super League.
With
the Premier League’s new TV deals due to start flowing from the summer -
to the tune of almost £3bn per year from 2016-17, the overall
expenditure is only likely to get bigger.
