Hannover are dreadful from every angle

Bayern Hannover 2016

Hannover 96’s numbers are appalling all-round, making their visit to FC Bayern München a nice prospect to sign off the league.

If a team gets to the last two matchdays knowing it has been relegated, you can rest assured its playing is awful. Take a look at the numbers, and you start to see a nefarious picture. Hannover have been, by far, the worst side in the league this year.

Crikey. Hannover do not even manage to score a goal every game on average. They come stone dead last in the goal scoring department. Ingolstadt have managed one more than they have, but those goals have actually served a good purpose: Ingolstadt are safe and dry at 10th position.

Still, and despite their position, they are not the league’s keenest conceders. With 59 goals against, they actually come third in that category, behind Stuttgart (72) and Werder Bremen (65). Not that it is much consolation: 1.79 conceded goals per game on average is quite bad.

Better away, few counterattacks

There is one quirky nugget to notice when you look at Hannover’s numbers. They have actually been better away from home than they have in their own stadium. Of the measly 25 points they have amassed, 13 were attained on the road. Mind you, it is only a single unit more than they have won in their own backyard. Nevertheless, it is more and more is better.

With three wins, four draws and nine defeats from 16 away games thus far, Hannover’s away record is not good, but not the worst in the league. In fact, both Wolfsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach have worse away records. I will insist once more that this does not make it good. Their goal difference away is also negative (15 scored, 29 conceded for a -14 deficit).

At this point, I am cherrypicking to show you what is “least bad” about Hannover’s season in terms of numbers.

One further interesting bit of information comes in the way Hannover score goals while away. None of them came from counterattacks, arguably the best weapon against Pep Guardiola’s Bayern. If nothing about Hannover’s terrible numbers had yet manage to convince you that this is a winnable game if there ever was one, this should.

With no counterattacking proficiency, a tendency to break down when attacked on the wings, and the small fact that they have already been relegated, Hannover are literally the easiest opponent Bayern could have been faced with in the last Bundesliga matchday.

Final thoughts

I will repeat myself here: this is a winnable game if there ever was one. Bayern should win it with ease, hopefully trouncing a hapless side that has nothing to play for. Please avoid the “we’re already champions and neither team has anything to play for” script. Beat them like you should.
