Henrikh Mkhitaryan to reject Borussia Dortmund contract offer - agent

Borussia Dortmund's Henrikh Mkhitaryan has just over 12 months remaining on his current contract.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is set to reject Borussia Dortmund's offer of a contract extension, with agent Mino Raiola saying in Bild: "Why should we prolong it now?"

Dortmund have been trying to tie Mkhitaryan to a new deal since the turn of the year but, going into the summer break, the 27-year-old has yet to put pen to paper and is about to enter the final 12 months of his current Borussia contract.

In the past few weeks, Dortmund have reiterated that there will be a decision "soon" and they were reportedly hoping to announce a positive outcome ahead of the DFB Pokal defeat to Bayern Munich on May 21.

However, German tabloid Bild said on Tuesday that the Armenia international is set to reject club's latest offer, and Raiola told the paper: "Why should we prolong it now? 'Micki' is under contract until 2017, and we continue to think about his future."

Raiola, who also represents the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku, reportedly wanted to include a release clause in Mkhitaryan's contract that would allow the midfielder to switch clubs should current BVB coach Thomas Tuchel leave the Westfalenstadion in the future.

However, Dortmund have said in the past they will no longer allow players to insert release clauses into their contracts.

"I won't comment on this," Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told Bild when asked about the breakdown in negotiations.

Mkhitaryan, the club's record signing when he joined from Shaktar Donetsk for €27.5 million in 2013, has excelled under Tuchel and was named the best outfield player of the season by his Bundesliga colleagues in the prestigious annual kicker player poll.

Dortmund are reportedly lining up a bid for Omer Toprak to replace Mats Hummels.

Dortmund, who finished runners-up in the Bundesliga, are facing a summer of upheaval, with captain Mats Hummels heading for Bayern and playmaker Ilkay Gundogan reportedly set for Manchester City despite a knee injury ruling him out until mid-October.

Mkhitaryan has been linked with Chelsea and Arsenal in recent weeks, but Dortmund have previously indicated that they could demand that players see out the final year of their deals even though they would no longer be able to command a transfer fee.

Star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has also been linked with a number of top European clubs, but Watzke told Sport Bild at the weekend that speculation the Gabon international was close to an exit was "nonsense."

Bild reported that Dortmund have stepped up their interest in Bayer Leverkusen defender Omer Toprak.

Borussia are reportedly willing to pay Leverkusen €22m for the defender, who could succeed Hummels in central defence, and the tabloid said the 26-year-old's salary would increase from €2.5m including all bonuses to €3.6m without bonuses.

Neven Subotic, who fell behind Hummels and Sokratis Papastathopoulos in the pecking order under Tuchel last season, has said he plans to hold talks with the club to determine his future.
