Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl has set a new Bundesliga record, taking possession of the ball 214 times in Dortmund's 2-2 draw with Cologne on Saturday.
While Dortmund's end to their Bundesliga season may have been
slightly disappointing, taking only one point from two games at
Eintracht Frankfurt and against Cologne, former 1860 Munich midfielder
Weigl surpassed Bayern Munich's Xabi Alonso to set the new league
record.
Up to his 83rd minute substitution, 20-year-old Weigl had 214 phases
of ball possession -- eight more than previous record-holder Xabi Alonso
had for Bayern Munich against Cologne last season.
Weigl, who joined Dortmund last summer, has played an impressive
maiden season at the Westfalenstadion, featuring in 50 games in all
competitions and starting in 41.
Julian Weigl took possession of the ball 214 times during Saturday's game.
Though Weigl has yet to score his first goal for Dortmund, he is one
of the outside bets to be called into Germany's preliminary squad --
which is due to be named in Berlin on Tuesday -- for the 2016 European
Championships.
Borussia Dortmund also set a club record for most goals scored in one
season thanks to Marco Reus' converted freekick on Saturday, which
brought the season tally to 82, one more than their previous record from
the 2012-2013 season.
It was also Dortmund's first goal from a free-kick since Robert
Lewandowski was on target in his final Bundesliga match for Dortmund at
Hertha in May 2014.
