Strunz tells Gotze to join Liverpool and ignore Dortmund idea

Mario Gotze to Liverpool is one of those transfers that looks so obvious, it's a wonder he's not already at Anfield holding aloft the club scarf and getting a bear hug from Jurgen Klopp. As soon as it became clear there was no Bayern Munich future for Gotze, even under new manager Carlo Ancelotti, the exit door flew wide open and a move became probable rather than possible.

Gotze's options in the German media have largely been narrowed down to Liverpool or Borussia Dortmund, without the wider interest which it would be assumed existed. After Bayern Munich honorary president Franz Beckenbauer told Gotze to go to Liverpool, a former player from the club has done exactly the same.

Thomas Strunz, also a former Germany international, is quoted by Sport1 as saying: "I would not advise him to return to Dortmund, because I believe that the expectations would be too big and that climate was not good for him. Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool are the better destination.

"In his place I would go to where I am comfortable, and I might follow in the footsteps of Jurgen Klopp."

There will certainly be expectation at Liverpool too, and Gotze would be welcomed as a game-changing signing, but perhaps an escape from Germany is what the World Cup winner most needs. And some belief put back in his game by Klopp... it really does all make sense.
