Fight time: Johny Hendricks vs Stephen Thompson is the headline bout of the Las Vegas tonight

BREAKING - UFC 197 ANNOUNCED

Confirmation that, as predicted, UFC 197 will see Daniel Cormier defend his light heavyweight title against the returning Jon Jones.

Hosted at Las Vegas’s MGM Grand on April 23, Demetrious Johnson will put his flyweight crown on the line in the co-main event against Henry Cejudo.

Another terrific night in prospect.

Benavidez/Makovsky next!

Next up is Joseph Benavidez vs Zach Makovsky.

Benavidez goes into the fight on a four-fight winning streak. He’s only ever lost to two fighters in his MMA career - Demetrious Johnson and Dominick Cruz. No shame in that. The No 1 contender in the flyweight division takes on the No 8-ranked fighter.

Humble in victory, Cirkunov said he heard Alex Nicholson’s jaw crack. Watching it back was rather unpleasant. Not for the squeamish.

It is all over!

Misha Cirkunov wins by submission!
Cirkunov secured an easy takedown and Nicholson lifted his head just enough for the Latvian to get the lock in.
A sharp twist of Nicholson’s once-broken jaw and he makes a very quick tap. That might be a re-broken jaw.

Cirkunov takes the first

That’s a solid opening round for Cirkunov. The busier fighter, landing some great kicks, though he was on the receiving end of a low blow with Nicholson getting a ‘firm warning’ from referee Herb Dean.

Nicholson’s corner tells him: “You’re not throwing with conviction.” Fair comment.
Also, if you didn’t know, this happened at the weigh-in yesterday:

Cirkunov/Nicholson is next!

Great start to the main card. Up next is Misha Cirkunov vs Alex Nicholson.

After the fight, Pyle said: “I’m very proud to be here. He took some good shots, what I thought was pretty hard and should have put him away. I just went in for the kill. I was looking for the ref to stop it.”

How Sean Spencer stayed standing from the elbow throughout the barrage is beyond me. Check out how Pyle finished the fight:

Mike Pyle wins by knockout!

Brilliant from Mike Pyle! What a victory!

That was absolutely outstanding. He stepped things up massively after the first round and after landing a
spinning elbow and a knee he began teeing off on Spencer who could no longer defend himself.
What a win for the 40-year-old.

One round all!

What a round! Spencer somehow stays alive after being stung badly by Pyle. His legs turned to jelly before finding himself on the end of a spinning back fist.

No idea how he stayed standing through all that.

Impressive recovery but it’s one round apiece.
Just watch this:

Spencer takes the first

Good first round. Spencer was the busier fighter and put his reach advantage to good use, though you’d have thought Pyle wouldn’t fight off the back foot so much.

The 40-year-old Pyle launched a late flurry but he’s lost the round, especially after being knocked down by a big right hand.
Here is Spencer’s right:

Josh Burkman wins via unanimous decision!

Noons didn’t take the final round. It’s a unanimous win for Josh Burkman - 30-27, 30-27, 30-27.

Burkman said: “This might be the best win of my career. 2016 was a year full of adversity, injuries and tough fights but coming here as a lightweight makes it all worth it.”

Up next we have the main card, starting with Mike Pyle and Sean Spencer!

They go the distance!

Much better from Noons, throwing more strikes in the final round than the first two combined.

He’ll lose the fight but he might have done enough to win the round. Burkman was in control for a lot of the final round but Noons landed far more.
Decision to come...

Here was the spinning back fist from the end of the second:

Two rounds to Burkman

This is bad from K.J. He did land a good right hook and a spinning back fist at the end of the round but he’s throwing nowhere near enough to even put doubt in the judges’ minds.
Burkman continues to throw kicks and he’s two rounds to the good.

Noons’s corner tell him ‘you’re doing good, man. You’re doing fine’.
He’s not.

Big slam from Burkman in the second:

First round to Burkman

That’s not a good round from Noons. In his defence Burkman was utilising his kicks well to keep Noons at a distance, but to not land a single strike for four minutes and 45 seconds is simply not good enough.

Noons’s corner tells him to apply a little more pressure in the second round. He certainly couldn’t apply less than he did in the first...

The featured prelim is next!

Up next is the featured prelim between Josh Burkman and K.J. Noons.

Quick and positive update on Noad Lahat who was knocked out earlier in the night: It is not suspected that he broke anything but he is going to hospital for further evaluation.

And Derrick Lewis said after his win: “I can’t be the beast if I don’t fight like one. I wanted to take his head off. That was the game plan.”

Imagine the best part of 19st landing these on you?

Derrick Lewis wins by knockout!

Wow. That was scary from Derrick Lewis.
The Black Beast landed some truly titanic shots. Even landing a couple from a standing position to the grounded Grabowski.

The Pole suffered a cut to the back of the head and before too many more shots landed it was called to a halt. Impressive win.

Justin Scoggins wins by unanimous decision!

That was only ever going one way. Hats off to Justin Scoggins, he takes it via unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27, 30-26.
A very ambitious Scoggins sent a message to Dana White, saying: “Let me be world champion this year. 2016 is Justin Scoggins’ year. Don’t put me on the shelf.

“I don’t care who [my next fight] is. You can give me Demetrious Johnson. I’ve got bigger goals than the flyweight championship. That is just the start of my journey.”

And on his opponent: “He’s better than he’s ranked, he’s a top-5 contender.”

They go the distance!

A slight improvement from Borg but probably not enough to win the round and definitely not enough to win the fight. This will be unanimous.

He’ll be disappointed with that but what an impressive performance by Scoggins.

I dare say that if he was to have the fight again he’d have made more of an effort to set those right hands up but most of them were being telegraphed by Scoggins.

Two rounds to Scoggins?

This is a very entertaining fight. Scoggins dominates another round but Borg looks so dangerous. He should be two rounds down and I imagine he’ll really come out swinging in the last.

Borg landed a great right hook but he’s being outscored in every department.
Here is that right hook:

Scoggins takes the first

Good round for Scoggins. Octagon position was good, threw some decent combinations and some dangerous head kicks.

Borg attempted a number of takedowns but made little ground with any of them. He’s looked lively but and can cause damage with his right hand but he’s not thrown enough and now has a bust nose. Improvement needed.

Ray Borg vs Justin Scoggins up next!

Next up we have the #12 ranked flyweight Ray Borg taking on 23-year-old Justin Scoggins.

After the last fight the stretcher was sadly called for Lahat but thankfully he managed to walk out of the Octagon.
Just listen to the knee:

Diego Rivas wins by knockout!

Wow! How about that!
Diego Rivas out of nowhere knocks Noad Lahat clean out! A perfectly timed flying knee and Lahat crumbled to the mat. That was absolutely huge.

Lahat takes the first!

Good round from Lahat who dominated from the start.
Have to mention the solid submission defence from Rivas, though. Lahat had him in a vicious neck crank but his absorbed the pressure well.

Unfortunately for him he wasn’t able to get in any sort of offensive position.

How much has that round taken out of the Chilean?

Here’s the choke that looked to have Rivas in trouble:

Gall and CM Punk face off!

So, there we have it, CM Punk and Mickey Gall meet face to face. There seems to be a lot of mutual respect between them and it’ll no doubt attract plenty of attention when they finally get it on.

After the fight, Gall said: “It feels amazing. Last time I was on the mic I was talking about one guy and I’m still thinking about one guy. I want to be fed, I’m hungry! Feed me CM Punk, please!”

Gall wins by submission!

Are you watching, CM Punk?! Impressive win for Gall.
Got the early knockdown and went to town on Jackson before securing the rear naked choke.

We’ve got four prelims to come, starting with Noad Lehat and Diego Rivas

Alex White wins by unanimous decision!

Alex White records a comfortable victory over Artem Lobov, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27. White was in control from the start and Lobov now has a point to prove in his next fight after back-to-back losses.

Next up is Mickey Gall vs Mike Jackson. Sure to be a thriller*!
*Sorry.

The premlims are underway!

Our two early prelims are underway as the countdown to Hendricks vs Thompson begins.
First up is Artem Lobov and Alex White before the eagerly anticipated bout between Mickey Gall and Mike Jackson.

Mickey Gall recently rose to prominence on Dana White’s reality show Lookin’ For A Fight where he called out former WWE star CM Punk.

Fight night

Former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks will face Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson tonight in a fight that could well have future welterweight title fight implications.

UFC Las Vegas had previously been booked as the pay-per-view event ‘UFC 196’, however, last week, injuries forced both main event stars Cain Velasquez and UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum to pull out at short notice.

With no suitable replacements readily available, the UFC had no choice but to downgrade the show to a ‘free TV’ event on Fox Sports for American audiences.

The good news is that these changes won’t affect UK viewing times or channels. The event will kick off at midnight on Saturday on UFC Fight Pass.

The remainder of the event will then be screened on BT Sport 2 with the prelims starting at 1am and then the main card beginning at 3am.

The new main event will see the former UFC welterweight champ Johny Hendricks take on Stephen
‘Wonderboy’ Thompson in a highly anticipated fight in the 170lbs division.
