Tyson Fury wants Wladimir Klitschko rematch to happen as soon as possible
Unbeaten and untested IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) is in a real hurray to get his rematch with former undisputed heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs) out of the way as soon as possible so that he can move on to bigger and better things like a unification match against the talented WBC champion Deontay Wilder. Fury sees the Deontay fight as the biggest fight in the heavyweight division in the past 100 years, and he can’t wait to get the fight to take place. The thing is Fury wants both the Klitschko and Deontay fight to be staged in the UK, and that would seem to be a non-starter.
It’s not realistic to ask those two giant heavyweights to fly over to England in order to fight in front of a crowd of hostile fans. Fury is going to need to downsize his dreams and think a little more realistically.
Fury would do himself a big favor if he just agreed to fight Wladimir in a neutral venue like Switzerland or Austria. Even a place like France would be good for a rematch between Fury and Klitschko. I don’t know about Paris, but one of the small cities with less turbulent stuff going on.
“I am hoping it’s ASAP,” Fury said to talksport.com about a rematch against Klitschko. “I don’t care where, if I have to go to Germany again, OK. I’d prefer it to be in the UK because I want to the lions’ den for him, I’d expect the favor returned. My dream is to fight at Old Trafford. I’ve been going there from being a little kid and I always said I dreamed of fighting at the [Manchester] United football ground.”
Fury beat Klitschko by a narrow 12 round unanimous decision last November in Dusseldorf, Germany. It had to have been the worst performance of Wladimir’s career, I think. If you look at the fights that Wladimir lost in the past to Lamon Brewster, Ross Puritty, and Corrie Sanders, Wladimir looked better in those fights than he did against Fury. Wladimir just looked like an old and shot fighter against Fury.
Wladimir’s once great accuracy was completely gone. He couldn’t even land a shot even when Fury was standing perfectly still right in front of him. Wladimir’s hand-eye coordination looked totally shot in the way that you see from athletes that have hit old age. As such, Wladimir rarely even tried to throw any power shots in the fight. He was just afraid to let his hands go.
“If I can’t fight there, then Wembley would be acceptable. If not Wembley then Cardiff. If not Cardiff then Stockport County, who knows – anywhere in the UK!” Fury said.
I hope Fury isn’t going to be a problem. If he starts dragging his feet over the venue for the fight, then I could see the negotiations being strung out forever. Fury just needs to agree to stage the fight where it’s going to make the most money. Unless Fury can guarantee that the rematch will fill a football stadium, then I think the smart move would be to have it take place in Germany again, because Wladimir can fill stadiums over there.
He’s proven it again and again. The last time I checked, Fury has never filled a football stadium in the UK.
