Ronaldo celebrates after his hat-trick
Cristiano Ronaldo delivered when it mattered as he tore into the Wolfsburg defense with a wonderful hat-trick. Real Madrid completed an incredible comeback winning the game 3-2 on aggregate. The Portuguese scored two goals in two quickfire minutes to give his team a two-goal lead at half-time and leveling it up on the night.
Wolfsburg thought they could at least force it into extra time but Ronaldo had other plans completing his hat-trick in the 77th minute to round off a historical win. Here are some of the records broken after the result.
29 – The most significant stat of the night is the Madrid’s achievement of a come from behind win for the first time in 29 years in an international competition after being 2 goals down in the first leg of a match.
6 – Real Madrid reached the semi-finals of the competition for the 6th successive time, a feat only matched by Barcelona in the history of the competition. Will they face each other in the finals this year?
The German lucky charm – The last time Real Madrid won the UEFA Champions League was two seasons ago, beating Atletico Madrid in the finals 4-1. That year they beat Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinals by the same scoreline of 3-2. They have once again beaten a German team by 3-2 in the quarterfinals this year. So history might repeat itself!
7 – Zidane is making his home nation proud. He is now the 7th manager from France to have reached the quarter-finals
