The German admits he would have liked to see former side Inter compete in the Champions League next season, but concedes their struggles at the start of 2016 might prove too much to overcome. Interview by Iacopo Iandiorio of La Gazzetta dello Sport
With Carlo Ancelotti set to take over at Bayern Munich this summer,
former midfielder Lothar Matthaus believes the Italian will continue to
bring success to the Bavarian side.
The 55-year-old featured for Die Bayern from 1984 to 1988 and then 1992 to 2000, winning a Scudetto, Supercoppa Italiana and UEFA Cup with Inter in between.
Matthaus is convinced Bayern are the favourites to win the Champions League this year, and while he’s pleased with what Pep Guardiola has brought to Germany, he expects success to continue under Ancelotti.
What are your best memories of Milan?
“The goal against Diego Maradona’s Napoli side in the key match for the Scudetto in 1989. The San Siro came down as the goal decided the title. The fans surprised me the most as they’ve remained in my heart.”
What are your thoughts on the Inter of today?
“They make things difficult. It’s a shame they lost so many points between January and February because they started well. They are playing better at this time but it is too late to claim a place in the Champions League.”
Who are your favourites to win the Champions League this season?
“I am obviously cheering for Bayern Munich as I played there a long time, but they are the favourites because of their history, and the results achieved this season. The other teams are tough as well. Just look at what happened to Barcelona and PSG. They were favourites and they are out. Bayern have all but won the Bundesliga so they can focus on the Champions League.”
What has Pep Guardiola changed about Bayern’s style?
“He brought a bit of Barcelona’s style to the team. Bayern had a bit of that already but now they play at a faster pace. Pep needs intelligent players as he always switches schemes, even during matches.”
What are your thoughts about Carlo Ancelotti taking over from Guardiola?
“I remember he was a great player, as he was the brains of Arrigo Sacchi’s AC Milan. He achieved great results with Chelsea, PSG and won the Champions League with Real Madrid. Several of his players have told me that he isn’t just a great coach, as he also has a great heart. He has a great relationship with everyone. He’s a great option after Guardiola.”
