The Gabonese international has had his heart set on a move to Real Madrid for some time, but Old Trafford officials were still fighting to convince him to change his mind.
According to a report in the Mirror today, however, Aubameyang has told them point blank that he will not be moving to the FA Cup finalists.
The Bundesliga’s top scorer has made no secret of his desire to move to the Spanish giants, revealing back in February that he would do so to honour the wishes of his deceased grandfather:
“In 2014, just before the death of my grandfather, who was born in Avila 100 kilometres from Madrid, I gave him the promise to play one day for Real,
“It’ll be complicated, but this (promise) is anchored to a corner of my heart.”
Nonetheless, Ed Woodward, who has made something of a habit of chasing lost causes, has been pursuing Aubameyang for months, offering him wages of over £200,000 per week upon the completion of a £60miliion transfer.
The effort has not yielded the desired result, however, and if the 26 year old does depart the Westfalenstadion this summer, it will be to Madrid rather than Manchester.
Manchester United, meanwhile, have also been hevaily linked with Everton striker Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian international is desperate to leave Goodison Park this summer and several clubs, including Bayern Munich and Chelsea, have also been linked with the striker.
A bid in the region of £60milion has been suggested, but Man United’s qualification (or not as the case may be) for the Champions League will have an impact on the targets they hope to acquire ahead of next season.
Paris Saint-Germain hero Zlatan Ibrahimović has also been linked, though that does appear contingent on José Mourinho replacing Louis van Gaal in the summer.
