We need to be confident, brave and purposeful

In third-placed Bayern Leverkusen, FC Schalke 04 come up against one of the league’s in-form sides side on Saturday (18:30 CEST). “Our opponents are in very good form and will come to Schalke with confidence,” said Andre Breitenreiter about the Werkself, who have won their last five Bundesliga games to nil.

Hence why the Schalke coach talked about a difficult task that they have to overcome. Breitenreiter believes the home advantage will be important for the team, as “we’ve beaten Wolfsburg and Gladbach at home this year. We want to do the same against Bayer Leverkusen.”

The 42-year-old has called on the fans to help this plan succeed. “We need to play with confidence, determination and courage, and we need to approach the match with clear heads,” he told. Furthermore, coming up against a direct rival in the Bundesliga table, a bit of luck will certainly play a role.

Andre Breitenreiter does not wish to speak about a ‘cup final’ in the fight for a place in Europe next season, even though a Werkself win in the VELTINS-Arena would see them take an almost unassailable lead over Schalke in the table. "After the game against Leverkusen we face another three games - just like every other team in the league. If possible, we would like to take maximum points from all three games," said Breitenreiter. "Our aim is still to finish the season to the best of our ability and secure our place in a European competition next year. The table only counts after matchday 34."

Which tactical approach the Knappen will take against the Rhineland side, Breitenreiter is not revealing. "We could be starting with the same eleven as last week. But we might also be changing a few things, perhaps there will be some surprises," he said. The coach expressed his satisfaction with how focused the team went about their work in training this week. "Every injury-free player is an option," he is pleased to say. One of these options could be Matija Nastasic. The Serb, who sustained a long-term injury in the first game of the season in Bremen is now back fully involved in team training.
