Pido Jarencio has seen his GlobalPort team slump to the cellar in a campaign hard-hit by injuries, primarily to backcourt stars Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle. Jerome Ascano
ARE the days of Pido Jarencio as head coach of GlobalPort in the PBA numbered?
Sources from inside the Sultan 900 Incorporated franchise said team owner Mikee Romero became so disappointed with the Batang Pier's side he has ordered a coaching switch in the middle of a game against Rain or Shine on Tuesday.
Romero, sources said, personally called team governor Erick Arejola and ordered that one of his assistant coaches, former pro Johnedel Cardel, take over the reins late in the 94-116 loss to Rain or Shine.
"In the middle of the game, tumawag si Mikee kay Erick Arejola at sinabi, 'Paupuin si Pido Jarencio at si (assistant coach) Erick Gonzales at ang magco-coach si John Cardel.' Yun ang nangyari last game," said the source.
It doesn't end there.
According to the source, the standing order from Romero is to have former La Salle star Cardel call the shots in the team's game against Phoenix on Friday, although no official coaching change will be announced.
"And then officially, bukas makikita mo from the very start of the game, ang tatayo (as coach) si Cardel," the source said.
The situation doesn't bode well for the tenure of Jarencio, whose team is mired in the cellar with a 2-8 card in a campaign hard-hit by injuries, primarily to backcourt stars Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle.
Jarencio, owner of a UAAP championship with alma mater University of Santo Tomas, was previously relieved of his coaching duties at GlobaPort before he was reinstated this season.
