I’m excited to see how everything plays out when some of the most skilful athletes in the world play what I believe is the greatest team sport on the planet
This week will be the first time since 1999 that I’m not kicking the season off as a First Utility Super League player - but there’s no regrets.
I’m sure there will be points that I want to get out and play - especially the World Club Challenge between Leeds and North Queensland Cowboys in a few weeks that holds the most emotional attachment.
But when I’ve been sat in the office at Hull KR in my new role as football manager, and the wind and rain has been blowing sideways outside, I’m quite content with my decision and what I was able to achieve in my career.
As a player I always moaned that the season is too long - now I can’t wait for it to come around.
I’m excited to see how everything plays out when some of the most skilful athletes in the world play what I believe is the greatest team sport on the planet.
Here’s my guide to who to keep an eye on in 2016.
Castleford Tigers
Key man: Ben Roberts
Player to watch: Ben Crooks
Peacock’s verdict: “They’ll feel they’re ready to crack the top and they’ve recruited well in Joel Monaghan. Their playmakers are settled and they’ll be difficult to beat.”
Catalans Dragons
Key man: Paul Aiton
Player to watch: Tony Gigot
Peacock’s verdict: “They’ve spent big. Everyone knows their problem - if they can sort their away form out they’ll make the top four, if they can’t they won’t.”
Huddersfield Giants
Key man: Ryan Hinchcliffe
Player to watch: Jake Connor
Peacock’s verdict: “Their challenge is to finally play well when it matters most and to peak at the right end of the year - but they know that.”
Hull FC
Key man: Gareth Ellis
Player to watch: Jack Logan
Peacock’s verdict: “They’ve gone big and will play the power game - it depends how that holds up over the course of the year. Their youngsters give them depth.”
Hull KR
Key man: Terry Campese
Player to watch: Matty Marsh
Peacock’s verdict: “We’re going to play better than our trial games that’s for sure. We don’t think they’re a true indicator and we’re quietly confident.”
Leeds Rhinos
Key man: Kallum Watkins
Player to watch: Ashton Golding
Peacock’s verdict: “They’ve lost players that have been at the heart of their success - but what they have left is a strong ethos that will withstand that.”
Salford Red Devils
Key man: Niall Evalds
Player to watch: Robert Lui
Peacock’s verdict: “Gone back to basics after realising what they were doing before wasn’t working. Huge experience in Tim Sheens and they’ll be tougher to beat.”
St Helens
Key man: Jon Wilkin
Player to watch: Theo Fages
Peacock’s verdict: “Top three material for sure. They have Super League’s best go-forward player in Alex Walmsley and Theo Fages and Lama Tasi are good signings.”
Wakefield Trinity Wildcats
Key man: Danny Kirmond
Player to watch: Tom Johnstone
Peacock’s verdict: “Will definitely improve under Brian Smith and be a systematically better side than before. It’s difficult with their budget but they will be more competitive.”
Warrington Wolves
Key man: Chris Hill
Player to watch: Kurt Gidley
Peacock’s verdict: “A big rebuilding job and some big name signings. Weren’t as bad as some made out last season and have a good coach - a dangerous side.”
Widnes Vikings
Key man: Kevin Brown
Player to watch: Matt Whitley
Peacock’s verdict: “They’ll be looking to get out of the bottom four. Chris Bridge’s signing will take some pressure off Kevin Brown which will help them.”
Wigan Warriors
Key man: John Bateman
Player to watch: Sam Tomkins
Peacock’s verdict: “Missed out on two trophies by the smallest of margins and expect them to be challenging again. A lot of talent and a good coach.”
