Malawi will have to do without the services of captain Limbikani Mzava
when they meet Zimbabwe in a crunch African Nations Cup qualifier in
Harare on Sunday.
The Mpumalanga Black Aces defender has pulled out of the trip with a hamstring injury, Malawian officials said.
Mzava’s withdrawal comes after the controversial axing of midfield
stalwart Robert Ngambi from the squad after an alleged difference of
opinions with coach Ernest Mtawali.
Former Orlando Pirates striker Chiukepo Msowoya will now lead the team, who will fly to Harare ion Friday.
The Flames still have Frank Mhango (Lamontville Golden Arrows), Micium
Mhone (Jomo Cosmos), Harry Nyirenda (Black Leopards) and Gerald Phiri
(Bidvest Wits) in their squad.
Malawi sit at the bottom of Group L but mathematically are still in with
a chance if they win their last two qualifiers for next year’s finals
in Gabon.
Sunday’s match at the Harare Sports Stadium is their penultimate tie and they finish at home to Swaziland on September 3.
Zimbabwe can secure top place in the group and qualify for the Nations
Cup final for the first time since 2006 if they beat Malawi and the
other group encounter between Swaziland and Guinea ends in a goalless
draw.
