England rugby league team set to appoint Brisbane Broncos' Wayne Bennett as coach

The 66-year-old has twice coached his national side as well as having a role with New Zealand when they won the 2008 World Cup

Coveted: Bennett is regarded as world's best coach

England are set to confirm the appointment of Australian rugby league coach Wayne Bennett before the end of the week.
Sources close to the Brisbane Broncos mentor suggest that the deal is close to completion.

The 66-year-old is widely considered as the leading coach in the sport following his unrivalled success in Australia, and has twice coached his national side as well as having a role with New Zealand when they won the 2008 World Cup.
Now he is set to take charge of England ahead of this autumn’s Four Nations in this country.

And that will spell the end of Steve McNamara’s time in charge, despite guiding England to a 2-1 series win over New Zealand last year.

Time's up: McNamara will step aside

Bennett will be the first Australian to coach England, although David Waite took charge of Great Britain between 2001 and 2003.
