Roman Abramovich attended Spain’s Euro 2016 clash in Bordeaux on Tuesday evening to run the rule over Chelsea target Alvaro Morata.

The striker scored – to take his tally to three at the finals, making him the joint-leading scorer with Gareth Bale – in Spain’s surprise 2-1 defeat to Croatia in what was the Group B decider.

Chelsea have already opened talks to sign Morata with Real Madrid having exercised the £23.6 million buy-out in the 23-year-old’s contract, having sold him to Juventus two years ago for £16 million.

The buy-out is understood to be in anticipation of selling Morata this summer for a substantial profit – a fee of £40 million has been mooted - with Chelsea targeting him and Everton’s Romelu Lukaku.

Morata would appear the more likely signing as things stand with the player having scored 27 goals in two seasons in Italy. Other clubs are interested in Morata but it appears that Chelsea are leading the way with Abramovich’s presence another clear indicator.

Abramovich flew into Bordeaux from London on Tuesday to attend the game and is expected to take in more Euro 2016 matches further into the finals. The Russian billionaire will also be closely following Italy’s progress with coach Antonio Conte taking over at Stamford Bridge once his country’s campaign is over.

Italy will now, of course, face Spain in the last 16.
