Two defeats in three years saw the Rojiblancos come agonisingly close to
their maiden European Cup, but both times they were narrowly defeat by
rivals Real Madrid
While his focus is now on Euro 2016 with Spain, Koke admits Atletico Madrid’s Champions League final heartache will live with him forever.
Having reached the showpiece twice in the last three years, meeting
neighbours Real Madrid on both occasions, Atleti suffered defeat in
cruel fashion, first losing 4-1 in extra-time in Lisbon, and then on
penalties in Milan on May 28.
It had looked as though they had done enough in each game to deserve
victory, and failing to do so now means the games are extremely hard to
forget for Koke.
“What happened in the Champions League final cannot be forgotten,” he
said. “Both Milan and Lisbon will always be there, I’ve not seen the
final and would rather not see it.”
There would be no better way of getting over the disappointment than
securing a third straight European Championship title with La Roja this
summer, and while Koke has not played much of a role yet, they have
reached the last 16 with two successive victories in Group D.
