Birmingham City’s scouting guru Ewan Chester has described how he turned down the chance of going to a Premier League club because of his emotional attachment to Blues.

The Scot has returned to St Andrew’s as full-time Football Consultant to Gary Rowett as Birmingham beef up their scouting and recruitment department.

He does so four years after leaving Blues to follow Chris Hughton to Norwich City and having also worked with the ex-Birmingham manager at Brighton.

Chester has told the Birmingham Mail he had several choices from but having been convinced by Gary Rowett , his head and his heart both were giving him the same feedback.

“I had the option of staying at Brighton and I had the option of going to a Premier League club or Blues - both of whom I met.

“But the emotional angle would always lead me back to Blues.

“There were two things that stayed in my mind and were factors in me coming back.

“Obviously Gary was highly impressive but when Chris came here he phoned me and said ‘This is a proper club’ and I always felt that.

“It was a massive factor in coming back.

“And the other was I love passion in football and I was at Craven Cottage when Blues won 5-2 and the first thing I did in terms of reporting back to Chris was mention the Blues fans.

“I thought they were outstanding, I loved the passion they showed. It’s the greatest thing in the game when you see that enthusiasm.

“Blues had got under my skin first time round, but seriously those two factors were massive.

“I have done all that going over the world thing, it’s vitally important for me that I enjoy what I am doing at my age. I want to enjoy the time I have in the game.”

Blues' latest transfer rumours:

Chester will work closely with Rowett as Blues look to bring in the four players the manager wants to take the team forward.

He will also complement the work of existing head of performance Darren Robinson.

“You work in association with everyone who’s at the club and the recruitment department. But I would imagine I will work closely with the manager and his staff.

“We will decide what they best course of action is regarding players.

“With my contacts in the game there are players that will be proposed to me, I would imagine we will all work as a team.”
