The Magpies had a bid in excess of £15million rejected last week but cash-splashing Mike Ashley has sanctioned an increased offer
Splashing the cash: Newcastle have offered big money for Saido Berahino
Newcastle have launched a huge £21m bid to sign Saido Berahino.Toon Army boss Steve McClaren is desperately trying to rush through a beat-the-deadline deal for the West Brom striker.
The biggest obstacle Newcastle will have is that 22-year-old Berahino would prefer a move to Tottenham.
And it could also tempt Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino to make a fresh move as he is keen to strengthen his options and sign another striker to support Harry Kane.
West Brom turned down a bid in excess of £15m for Berahino from Newcastle last week and Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace has insisted he is not for sale.
Competition: Tottenham boss Pochettino also wants to sign Berahino
But Newcastle’s new bid is likely to test West Brom’s resolve especially as Berahino has just 18 months left on his current deal.Newcastle have big cash to spend and believe that West Brom may sell because boss Tony Pulis is keen to cash in and use the money to strengthen his squad.
Pulls wanted to sell in the summer and it is now down to Peace to see whether the deal will go through.
Newcastle are also close to a loan deal for Roma striker Seydou Doumbia who arrived on Tyneside on Sunday to discuss personal terms and to undergo a medical.
Doumbia would be a loan with a view to a permanent £7m switch but Berahino is the big deal they really want to push through.
