“The first 20 minutes he was very bad,” said the Dutchman, whose side survived a scare to win 3-1 on Friday night
Anthony Martial's display against Derby earned him rave reviews – but Louis van Gaal was not entirely impressed.
The Manchester United manager praised the Frenchman for his role in the 3-1 win, but not before criticising him for starting the match slowly.
Martial played on the left and set up Juan Mata's goal with an impressive turn of pace, report the Manchester Evening News.
But offered the chance to applaud the 20-year-old’s display, Van Gaal first pointed to his failings on the night.
“The first 20 minutes he was very bad,” said the Dutchman. “Maybe you have noticed that because everyone is saying how fantastic he played - man of the match.
“But you have to play 90 minutes good.
“I have said that already to him otherwise I could not say it to you.
“But after that first 20 minutes he was fantastic.”
