Murray reached the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open alongside John Peers last year, but has gone one step further at the first time of asking with his new partner
The Scot had reached the last two finals with ex-partner John Peers at Wimbledon and the US Open and lost.
But it was third time lucky in the Rod Laver Arena when Murray and his new Brazilian partner Bruno Soares beat Daniel Nestor and Radek Stepanek 2-6 6-4 7-5. Playing after the three-set women's final, Soares served out the victory at 12.58am local time.
Murray, who helped Great Britain to Davis Cup glory in November, broke down in tears in his post-match speech. “Andy, you should be in bed. I don't know why you are here taking photos. Good luck tomorrow.”
Champions: Murray and Soares are the Australian Open men's doubles winners
The Scot and the Brazilian only teamed up at the start of the year but have now won two out of the three tournaments they have entered. “It is only one month but I think we can retire now,” joked the Brazilian.
The winners share a winner's cheque of £300,000.
Nestor said: “I want to congratulate our opponents. We had them on the ropes in the second set but they really came through.”
Andy Murray will bid to complete a family double in the men's final against Novak Djokovic tomorrow.
