Szczesny would face serious competition for the number one jersey from both Petr Čech and David Ospina should he return to Arsenal, and is therefore believed to be likely to extend his stay in Italy.

The deal would see Arsenal receive an initial loan fee this year whilst also containing an option to buy the 26-year old should Roma want to make the transfer permanent. The Italian side would also pay all of Szczesny's wages during the extended loan spell.

Poland v Northern Ireland - Group C: UEFA Euro 2016

Szczesny, who is currently at Euro 2016 with Poland, fell out of favour with Arsene Wenger in the 2014-15 season, losing his place to David Ospina in the final months of the campaign after a number of high-profile errors.

The goalkeeper was recently quoted on his time in Rome saying: "Everyone knows I'm really happy here. I'd like to be able to tell you about my future, but I don't know what it holds for me. I've expressed my intentions to the two clubs and now it's up to them. I have to decide what's best for my career."

The deal may have to wait until Szczesny's commitments with his national side are finished but with goalkeeping competition so tough at Arsenal and a clear desire from Roma to push the deal through, it looks as though the Pole will remain in the Italian capital for a while longer.
