Burnley's Joey Barton celebrates promotion

Former Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton revealed on the Weekend Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Saturday morning (broadcast from 7am, June 11) that Celtic fans urged him not to join Rangers.

Barton has moved to Rangers on a free transfer after leaving Premier League-bound Burnley.

The English midfielder is a high-profile signing for the Gers, who won the Scottish Championship this past season and will feature in the Scottish Premiership during the 2016-17 campaign.

The 33-year-old former Queens Park Rangers and Manchester City man has revealed that Celtic fans in Glasgow urged him not to join Old Firm rivals Rangers in the summer transfer window.

“When I was up there (in Glasgow), I did get stopped by a couple of Celtic fans, (asking me) not to sign for Rangers," said Barton on the Weekend Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Saturday morning (broadcast from 7am, June 11).

"They were saying, ‘Don’t do it’. I was with Mark Warburton walking down the street, and they were like, ‘Don’t do it, Joey. Don’t do it’.”

Barton may be 33 years of age, but he remains a very good footballer and should prove to be a brilliant signing for Rangers.

The Gers will be aiming to compete with Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next season, and the Englishman will bring with him a lot of experience.

The former Newcastle midfielder scored three goals and created 29 chances in 38 Championship appearances for Burnley during the 2015-16 campaign.

Burnley had a pass accuracy of 75% and a shot accuracy of 31%, and won 67 headers, 15 dribbles and 82 tackles.
