Several players see their contracts expire at the end of the 2016-17 season. Will Bayern extend them?
With Carlo Ancelotti taking over the reigns at Bayern Munich this summer, changes will be afoot. It will likely be a busy transfer window
for the Bavarians, as they work to reshape the club in the Italian's
image. However, it's the following summer that will be the most
interesting one for the Bayern board.
Eight players on the current
Bayern squad see their deals expire in the summer of 2017. Many of those
players are established and senior members of the team with their best
days behind them. However, it's very possible that many of them remain
with the club. For others, is retirement in the cards?
Xabi Alonso
It's hard to imagine Alonso
playing past next season, at least with Bayern. He'll be 35 years old at
the end of next season, and it's tough to see any reason whatsoever
that Bayern would keep him on the squad beyond that. Alonso will most
assuredly assist in the midfield transition to a younger generation.
Alonso will finish his contract and move on to retirement or a less
demanding league.
Holger Badstuber
Oh, Holger. Everyone's favorite
oft-injured centerback will see his deal come to a conclusion during
the summer of 2017. Bayern have already given a Holger one extension
during these horrendous, injury-plagued three and a half years. Will
they give him one more? He's only 27 years old, and barring an early
retirement due to the injuries, I think Bayern and Badstuber will work
out a deal to see him remain in Munich for another few years.
Kingsley Coman
This is unquestionably the
biggest no-brainer in the bunch. Coman is on a two year loan deal from
Juventus, and that expires in the summer of 2017. However, Bayern have
until the end of April 2017 to make Coman's loan for only €21 million.
Failure to make Coman's transfer permanent would be a catastrophic
blunder and won't happen. Coman will likely sign a big contract to
remain in Munich in the next calendar year.
Mario Götze
This is easy the most difficult
decision that Bayern have to make moving forward. Götze isn't a better
winger than any currently on Bayern's roster. He's not a better second
forward than Thomas Müller. He's not a better midfielder than Thiago
Alcantara. However, this decision is definitely not one that will be
made by only one side. Götze will have to decide if he wants to continue
to fight for a spot at Bayern or if he wants to take his chances at
another club.

Julian Green
Bayern signed Green to a
professional contract a few years ago, and it comes to an end in the
summer of 2017. He will be 21 in a few months, and while Green may yet
become a Bundesliga-quality player, it's safe to assume that it won't be
in a Bayern jersey.
Rafinha
It can be argued that few players have reached their peak under Pep Guardiola
like Rafinha has. The Brazilian right back has emerged as a competent
and relatively steady fill-in for Philipp Lahm. With Herr Kapitän in his
final few seasons with Bayern, it's high time the club begin to
officially look into a long term replacement. That, however, will not be
Rafinha. Rumors have started trickling out in the last few days that
Arsenal are interested. Perhaps, it's time to let Rafinha depart and
look for the future.
Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben
It's destiny that the legendary
duo Robbery would see their contracts come up at the exact same time.
Injuries have decimated the last few seasons of their career, and now
that they're in the latter stages of their careers, every time they miss
a game we come closer and closer to the end of their careers. Ribery is
33, and Robben is 32. They're not getting any younger. At this point,
it wouldn't be 100% shocking if we see an early retirement or requested
transfer to a lesser league for one or both players. Or, perhaps they'll
both just player out their contracts at Bayern and depart next summer
as conquering legends, having won everything there is to win.
