"Massively disappointed"

The Wolves are eager to rehabilitate from the 1-5 defeat in Dortmund with wins in the two remaining games of the season.

Speechless, baffled and clearly shocked – that was the picture of the Green-Whites as they left Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park on Saturday afternoon following the clear 1-5 defeat to Borussia. It was the Wolves seventh consecutive Bundesliga game without a win and a defeat which definitively ended any theoretical chance of qualifying for European competition next season. "It really hurts! There is absolutely no excuse for it!" stated Bas Dost. And captain Diego Benaglio added: "We are all massively disappointed and frustrated that we once again failed to put in a good performance."

"We had high hopes"

VfL’s game plan was quickly crushed, as the Wolves found themselves trailing by two goals after just nine minutes. "We had really high hopes and wanted to show another side to ourselves, but we got off to a very bad start. We got a grip on ourselves after the 0-2 and did a bit better until the break, but we fell apart after the 0-3," said Diego Benaglio. Prior to the match, the Green-Whites had been optimistic that they could get back on course: "We worked well during the week, had a lot of fun in training and had big plans to be aggressive, determined and committed. That was all blown apart after nine minutes," explained André Schürrle. "We wanted to hold our own and put in the leg-work, but once again we found ourselves chasing the game. That’s extremely difficult against a team like Dortmund," commented Daniel Caligiuri.

Schäfer makes 250th Bundesliga appearance for VfL

The clear defeat in Dortmund darkened a very special anniversary for VfL’s all-time record appearance maker Marcel Schäfer. The left full-back pulled on the Green-White shirt on Saturday for the 250th time in the Bundesliga. What should have been an occasion to celebrate, the 1-5 defeat forced the anniversary into the background. "No-one achieved the necessary performance levels today. We now we are going through a phase in which we have very little self-confidence. We were playing against a team with whom we were at eye-level at the beginning of the season. At the moment we are nowhere near them. That is extremely disappointing," remarked Schäfer.

"All at stake"

'Schäfi‘s' opinion was shared by Klaus Allofs. "I am really angry", stated VfL’s Director of Sport. "In training there were positive signals and you got the feeling that things could go better. We didn’t achieve that though.

Right now, the way we are reacting as a team is just not enough and that’s something we should be concerning ourselves with. That’s mediocre – maybe even less than that at the moment. All the things that made us so strong in the last year, when we paid the greatest of attention to discipline and to implementing tactical issues, are currently not present in the form we are used to." Although qualification for European competition is no longer a possibility, Klaus Allofs has thrown down the gauntlet to the team for the remaining games in the league. "All is at stake. I don’t want to finish the season with two defeats. We need to show positive tendencies – that’s necessary for the coming season."
