Manchester United edge closer to signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but will have to cough up £70m for Borussia Dortmund star

Manchester United have moved closer to making Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang their key summer signing but may have to pay up to £70million to bring the Borussia Dortmund striker to Old Trafford and hope Real Madrid don’t pursue their interest.

Meetings last week have established Aubameyang as the No 1 target for the summer and United are confident they can sign the striker as long as Real Madrid don’t make a bid.

Real Madrid are monitoring potential centre forwards and want to sign Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich but may not be able to prise him from the Bundesliga club, meaning Aubameyang, who has scored 36 goals in 42 appearances would become an alternative.

Aubameyang will remain the key transfer target whether Ryan Giggs or Jose Mourinho take over as manager next season, with sources close to the negotiations having been told that Mourinho will be manager if Louis van Gaal finishes outside the top four, an increasingly-likely prospect.
