Arsenal ready to pounce for £50m-rated striker – report

According to a report in the Mirror, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is ready to pounce if Robert Lewandowski decides to leave Bayern Munich this summer.

Wenger looks set to see-out the final year of his contract [at least] after protests at yesterday’s Norwich City game fell flat and it looks as though the boss is already making plans for the transfer market.

A top class striker has been needed since Robin van Persie left in 2012 and it appears Arsene is once again going to try and finally land a front-man worthy of leading the line at a club like Arsenal.

The Mirror claim today that Wenger is ready to make his move for Robert Lewandowski if the hitman decides to leave Bayern Munich in search of a new challenge.

The newspaper suggest that Wenger will have as much as £150m available to spend this summer and is ready to use a large portion of his ‘warchest’ to lure Lewadowski to North London.

The Polish international is one of the best all-round strikers in world football and has scored 38 goals in all competitions this season to help Bayern be on the verge of reclaiming the Bundesliga title as well as reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Obviously we’d all love to see him come to the Emirates this summer and I think he’d be the perfect fit at
Arsenal but immediate question is why on earth would he leave a team like Bayern Munich?

Well, one theory is that he could look for a new challenge now that Pep Guardiola – the man who took him
to the Allianz Arena – is set to leave at the end of the season.

Plus, Lewandowski hinted just last week that he would like to test himself in the Premier League at some point in his career, so maybe the 27-year-old will see this summer as the perfect opportunity.

He still has three years left on his current contract and the Mirror suggests that it would take a bid of £50m to tempt Bayern in to a sale – which I actually think is a more than reasonable price in today’s over-inflated market.

It would certainly be an ambitious move if we went for Lewandowski and I’m sure the likes of Real Madrid would also be keen, but at least we’d be showing a bit of balls in the market again. The problem is, I don’t see Arsenal really doing all they can to land him.

Will Arsene pay whatever it takes? Never. Will we use underhand tactics [like the rest of the big clubs do] to unsettle the striker? Never. Will we offer huge wages to fend off the likes of Madrid? Never.

So unfortunately, while it would be a dream signing if we could sign Lewandowski, I just don’t see us winning the race if he did look for a new challenge this summer.
