Find out exactly what the Villa boss wants this summer
New manager Roberto Di Matteo of Aston Villa
Aston Villa are targeting a set-piece specialist to help improve their goal tally this season.
Boss
Roberto Di Matteo has a number of players under consideration but is
thought to have given up hope of signing Norwich ace Robbie Brady.
The
Republic of Ireland star impressed at this summer’s European
Championships and has subsequently attracted interest from Leicester,
Albion and Southampton.
It means Villa will be unable to persuade him to stay in the
second-tier when a number of Premier League clubs are keen on his
services.
Di Matteo does have a list of options, though, and at this stage, he’s keeping his cards close to his chest.
A number of targets have been identified both in England and on the continent.
And
with Jordan Veretout - the man with the most assists last season -
still unsure over his future, Di Matteo knows he needs to recruit this
month.
Villa failed to score a single goal directly from a
free-kick in the league last term and set up only four strikes from
set-piece situations (excluding penalties).
The coaching team have highlighted the need to improve that figure this season and is carefully considering who to approach.
The
plan is to get all the incoming transfer business done by the start of
the Championship season as Villa need to hit the ground running.
Di Matteo knows these weeks leading up to the August 7 opener are crucial which is why he moved quickly to sign Tommy Elphick.
