Watford were up and down in the Premier League after their
promotion. Extending team captain Troy Deeney is the perfect step
towards maintained relevance.
Troy Deeney has been the subject of intense speculation lately as the Watford
captain has been facing increased bids from Leicester City. Everyone
(including myself) assumed he would be moving to the EPL champions to
accommodate for their assumed loss of Jamie Vardy.
Well, none of that ever happened, and now, Deeney has put his money
where his mouth is. He hasn’t just confirmed he was staying via social
media, now he has extended his stay with a new five year contract.
Deeney made note that he had discussions with Watford and it was
decided that a new deal was what was best for him and for the club
moving forward.
Sometimes new contracts beat new signings, and that is the case
here with Watford. Troy Deeney was so much more than just a striker and a
goal scorer, he was the spiritual leader of that Watford team and a big
part of what kept them floating in the middle of the table. It is safe
to say that without him, they would not have fared as well as they did.
I did a piece not long ago praising the faith and loyalty that
Watford and Deeney have in each other, but this all just reinforces it.
New contracts are a part of everyday life, but a five-year deal is a big
deal. It shows exactly what Deeney stands for and it is the perfect
next step for Watford.
Part of the struggle of staying in the Premier League is finding
new stars to keep you relevant. But another big part is holding onto the
people that got you there and building around them. It’s no strange
occurrence to see teams get promoted only to have them lose some of
their better players to bigger teams.
Somehow, that has not been as big of a problem this year as in years
past. Some of that has to come down to Leicester City breaking through
and doing the impossible. Guys are now believing that they can do it too
and that effects Watford and Bournemouth too, neither of whom are
facing significant losses.
Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo were the two biggest pieces of
Watford’s success and both have declared their intentions and loyalty to
Watford. Which is most certainly rare in this day and age, when money
and instant gratification dominate the footballing world.
