Villarreal have reportedly increased their bid for Wolfsburg attacker Daniel Caligiuri to €7m in a clear sign of intent.
According to Bild, Villarreal have turned to Caligiuri as they look to
bolster their forward line, which has been weakened by the recent
departues of Samu Garcia, Nahuel Leiva and – imminently – Denis Suarez.
The Yellow Submarine are understood to have opened the bidding at €5m,
but the Germans are keen to recoup as much as possible for the
28-year-old, who is out of contract next summer and has yet to discuss a
renewal.
“There have been enquiries [from Villarreal] for Daniel, but the first
point of contact is Wolfsburg,” Wolfsburg director Lars-Wilhelm
Baumgarten told the newspaper.
Although born in Germany and having spent his entire career in the
country, Caligiuri – who can play anywhere up top – is also eligible to
play for Italy through his father and earned a call-up to the latter
last year, although he did not make an appearance.
Villarreal, meanwhile, are due to participate in the Champions League
playoffs next month, hence their insistence on wrapping up deals
quickly.
