The World Cup winner made 36 appearances for Boro in 2000/01, and is currently working as an ITV pundit at Euro 2016
Former Middlesbrough FC player Christian Karembeu has delivered a
good luck message to the club ahead of their return to the Premier
League.
The French midfielder made 36 appearances for Boro in 2000/01 during an illustrious career, which also saw him play football in Italy, Spain, England, France and Greece.
Karembeu,
who retired a decade ago, won a host of trophies during his playing
days, including two UEFA Champions League titles, a World Cup, a
European Championship, as well as domestic titles at Nantes, Real Madrid
and Olympiacos.
And in an interview with Press Association,
Karembeu was asked about former club Boro - and revealed he's hoping
they can achieve big things in the Premier League this season.
"I'm very happy Boro came back to the Premier League and hopefully they'll do a good job," said the 45-year-old, who is currently working as an ITV pundit at Euro 2016.
"I know Aitor Karanka very well from La Liga, he's from Madrid and he did a great job with Jose Mourinho.
"So far he's doing well with Boro and hopefully he'll be successful."
During his Boro days, Karembeu lived in Teesside with wife Adriana
Sklenarikova, but separated from the Slovak model in 2011 after 13 years
together.
Karembeu's ex-wife famously went on to model the designs for a potential Boro away kit.
Boro clinched the £2.1m signing of French international midfielder Karembeu in July 2000 , on the same day that Australian skipper Paul Okon agreed to move to Teesside.
Karembeu,
who linked up with Boro immediately following France’s Euro 2000
victory, said: “It’s a big challenge to win a first trophy with Boro.
It’s a big, big deal for me.”
