Arsenal must fend off interest in star: Centre-back keen on £20m Roma move

ARSENAL may struggle to fight off rival interest in Bayern Munich centre-back Medhi Benatia this summer, according to reports.

The Gunners yesterday emerged as suitors of 29-year-old Benatia, who recently admitted he could leave Bayern.
However, reports in Italy claim three clubs are also interested in the Morocco international.

Benatia is said to be keen on moving back to Serie A, having played for Udinese and Roma during a four-year stretch in Italy.

According to Italian website Calciomercato, Juventus and Inter Milan are eyeing summer bids for Benatia.
But the player himself reportedly wants to join manager Luciano Spalletti at Roma.

Benatia played for the Rome club for a year before heading to Bayern in 2014.
He cost Bayern €26million (around £20m) and the Bundesliga champions would likely demand a similar figure to let him leave this summer.

Last week he discussed his future, telling Sky Sport Italia: "In my case, if I have to leave Bayern at the end of this season, then I will leave.

"I will not do it like the managerial staff, who spoke about transfer rumours before an important game like the semi-finals of the Champions league [against Atletico Madrid].

"I am only thinking on finishing the season well and I want to live great emotions. I am talking about the Champions League, the Bundesliga title and the German Cup. In a player's career, it is important to live these moments."

Arsenal could dip into the market for a new centre-back as manger Arsene Wenger seeks to restructure his defence.

Spalletti, meanwhile, will prepare for Roma's return to the Champions League next season by adding to his squad, having only taken over as manager back in January.
