Russia sports minister Mutko dismisses doping claims as smear campaign to move 2018 World Cup

Mutko
Russia’s sports minister Vitaly Leontiyevich Mutko has strongly denied any involvement in attempting to conceal the positive drug test result of an FC Krasnodar player after allegations were made in a documentary on Wednesday.

Sport in the Eastern European country has come under  intense scrutiny in recent days following accusations that doping is widespread across Russian sport, while their supporters have been involved in violence at Euro 2016.

However, Mutko refuted the claims made in the documentary aired by German broadcaster ARD and argued it is part of a smear campaign to get the 2018 Russia World Cup moved elsewhere.

Addressing the allegations, Mutko told the RIA news agency: “One of the reasons for the doping scandal with Russian sportspeople is the desire to dredge for compromising information with regard to the 2018 World Cup.

“First they tried through FIFA but didn’t succeed. Now they are investigating the laundering of bribes, they are trying to get in from the other side.”

The argument made for Mutko’s involvement with the unknown Krasnodar player relates to an email document which had instructions to be sent on to VL (Vitaly Leontiyevich) clearly written on them.

Mutko argued that those initials could belong to someone else though, telling Tass: “The initials could be somebody else’s. Thousands of people use me as a reference. How can I help somebody to cover up something? Destroy it myself? This is laughable and implausible.”

Despite the severity of the accusations levelled at Mutko, a spokesman for Russia’s president Vladimir Putin has insisted they remain behind Mutko and are treating ARD’s allegations as libellous.

The doping scandal to emerge over the last few days has further cast a shadow over Russian sport as the poor behaviour of their supporters led to UEFA handing them a suspended disqualification from Euro 2016.

On the pitch Russia are facing a tough challenge to progress from Group B after claiming just one point from their opening two games with their final fixture to come against Wales.
