Daryl Murphy urges Ireland boss to unleash him in crunch Euro 2016 clash with Italy

Ahead of the Republic of Ireland’s do or die Euro 2016 decider against Italy on Wednesday, Daryl Murphy has urged Martin O’Neill to let him loose so he can prove his worth before it’s too late.

Victory is the only outcome that could see progression to the knockout stages and even that might not guarantee one of the four best third-place spots in the last 16.

Ireland have managed one goal from their first two games and while Murphy has yet to find the net in 21 international appearances, the 33-year-old is eager to make his impact on the tournament having failed to get off the bench against Sweden and Belgium.

Ireland must beat the Azzurri to stand any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages at Euro 2016

‘It would be nice to play some part. I’m delighted to be here but you don’t want to just make up numbers, you want to get a chance. But it’s been hard for the manager to look at the bench and use me – hopefully it’s the case in the last game,’ he said.

‘I don’t know what the manager is going to do, we know what we need to do but I don’t know what the manager is thinking of.’

The eagerness to make an impression and the growing restlessness among those on the fringes is something O’Neill must now contend with as he approaches a three-day period which could well define his time as Ireland manager.

Murphy, along with Stephen Quinn, David Meyler, Cyrus Christie, Richard Keogh and Shane Duffy have held watching briefs, along with back-up goalkeepers Shay Given and Keiren Westwood.

The next three days could come to define O'Neill's time as manager of Ireland

Romelu Lukaku scored a brace as Ireland were soundly beaten 3-0 by Belgium in their last gameĀ

On the back of two gruelling, if different, encounters, the stage might just be set for a player to emerge and write their name into the history books with a precious contribution against the Azzurri to revitalise Ireland’s Euro 2016 cause.

‘It would be nice alright,’ said the Ipswich Town striker, who was given extra time off by club boss Mick McCarthy towards the end of the season to recover from a calf injury. ‘We need to believe going into that game that we can win it, it’s as simple as that. We’ve played some very good teams and got good results so there’s no reason why we can’t do that.

‘Of course the belief is there, this [Belgium] game is gone.

‘We know what we need to do, it’s a case of believing that we can do it.’

Italy, pictured training in Montpellier on Sunday, have already qualified for the next stages

Italy have not only secured their place in the last 16, but they are also assured of finishing top of Group E with six points and a superior head-to-head record against Belgium.

Allied with a glut of key players just one booking away from suspension, manager Antonio Conte is contemplating making up to seven changes.

‘I hope that’s the way they approach it,’ Murphy added, before stressing the need for Ireland to be positive. ‘But they’ll be very professional in the way they approach it and they’ll want to win it. It’s up to us to bring the game to them.’
