» Leicester City star, Emile Heskey explains why he swapped for Liverpool
Heskey was a record signing for Liverpool back in 2000.
Emile Heskey has explained to the Daily Express why he swapped Leicester City for Liverpool 16 years ago, for what was a then-club record £11 million fee.
Heskey had a promising career at Leicester having helped the side
into the top flight and to win two League Cups before making the switch
to Anfield.
He told the Daily Express:
"I was 22 at the time, I went through two cup finals with Leicester and
the play-offs final - in essence I thought that was as far as we were
gonna go as a squad.
"And I chose to move because I wanted to win more - so that was
my reason behind that. Looking at it I thought that was as far as
Leicester could go but then they go and win the league!"
Heskey did indeed further his career with Liverpool and he seemed
to make the right choice by scoring 60 goals from 223 games - winning
two League Cups, the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup - and playing his part on a
memorable European night against Roma when he scored the goal that took
the Reds to the Champions League quarter-finals in 2002.
Obviously, Heskey did not envisage, like many of us, what would
happen to Leicester in the coming years by getting promoted to the Premier League
in 2014, only to win the title two seasons later, although it is safe
to say it is doubtful he stuck around the club until now whether he
would have had a major part to play or if he was wanted given the path
his career took since.
Heskey did refer to Jamie Vardy's current future in the
interview, urging him to stay and cement his legendary status at the
club. Vardy has probably already experienced the highlight of his
career, Heskey's highlights came with his move.
