VfB Bundesliga debut: Matthias Zimmermann

VfB experienced a bitterly disappointing evening away to SV Werder Bremen. Following several setbacks, coach Jürgen Kramny’s men battled back twice – intermittently making it 1-1 and then pulling it back to 2-3.

On the night though, the Cannstatt Boys never managed to come to terms with the Bremen attack, made far too many errors and thus conceded too many unnecessary goals. At the end of the ninety minutes, the score-board beamed out a painful 2-6 (1-3) result, from the Stuttgart viewpoint. To add salt to the already open VfB wounds, there were also two injury forced substitutions.

Personnel

VfB head-coach Jürgen Kramny was forced to compensate for the late exemption of Christian Gentner. The captain was struggling with muscular problems. Florian Klein and Timo Werner initially took up places on the bench. The trio were duly replaced by Matthias Zimmermann, making his Bundesliga debut for VfB, Georg Niedermeier and Alexandru Maxim in the starting eleven.

Highlights

10th minute: Jürgen Kramny’s men go behind. The hosts make it 1-0 through Fin Bartels.

26th minute: VfB push for the equaliser and are duly rewarded for their determined efforts, with Daniel Didavi getting on the end of a laid-back pass from Alexandru Maxim to level the scores – 1-1.

33rd minute: A further setback for VfB. Bremen’s Yatabare launches the ball high into the penalty area, where a lack of communication leads to Federico Barba heading into his own net.

37th minute: The Cannstatt Boys have increased their attacking efforts and frustratingly see a headed effort from Martin Harnik bounce away off the post.

43rd minute: The hosts make more effective use of their chances and increase their advantage to 3-1 through substitute Levin Ötzunali.

44th minute: It’s beginning to look very much like an evening to forget for VfB Stuttgart. Daniel Didavi is forced out through injury before the break and is replaced by Timo Werner.

53rd minute: Directly after the re-start, VfB throw themselves a lifeline and reduce the deficit. A delivery by Alexandru Maxim is deftly flicked home by Federico Barba – 2-3.

61st minute: Now Federico Barba is also unable to continue. The injured central defender is replaced by Mart Ristl…

65th minute: …and Bremen restore their two goal advantage, with Claudio Pizarro firing home from the edge of the box to make it 4-2 for the home side.

80th minute: Fin Bartels nabs his second of the night to increase Werder’s lead to 5-2.

86th minute: Anthony Ujah makes it 6-2 for the hosts! Shortly afterwards, the final whistle ends a disastrous night for the Cannstatt Boys.

Summary

The result on Monday night was undoubtedly a massive setback for VfB in their fight for survival in the top-flight. On the night, the Cannstatt Boys were unable to stem the flow of the opposition attack and must now quickly shake off the frustration and focus on the remaining games.
